Salon.com News | Oiling up the draft machine?:
"The community draft boards that became notorious for sending reluctant young men off to Vietnam have languished sinced the early 1970s, their membership ebbing and their purpose all but lost when the draft was ended. But a few weeks ago, on an obscure federal Web site devoted to the war on terrorism, the Bush administration quietly began a public campaign to bring the draft boards back to life. "

"And now, direct from Ground Zero, heeeeeeere's the president!

Well, that's not exactly how President Bush is likely to be introduced when he gives his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention on Sept. 2, but it might be something equally dramatic and theatrical.

According to sources privy to convention planners? discussions, the 2004 GOP conclave at New York's Madison Square Garden will be unlike any previous quadrennial gathering of either party. In fact, not all of the main events will be held at the Garden, sources involved in planning the Aug. 31-Sept. 2 convention said."

"California, with the largest haul of Democratic delegates up for grabs on 'Super Tuesday,' is by some measures the biggest political prize in the primary elections. But next week's primary is barely registering with voters. 'Primary, what primary?' asks the Financial Times."

The Political Compass: "There's abundant evidence for the need of it. The old one-dimensional categories of 'right' and 'left' , established for the seating arrangement of the French National Assembly of 1789, are overly simplistic for today's complex political landscape. For example, who are the 'conservatives' in today's Russia? Are they the unreconstructed Stalinists, or the reformers who have adopted the right-wing views of conservatives like Margaret Thatcher ?
On the standard left-right scale, how do you distinguish leftists like Stalin and Gandhi? It's not sufficient to say that Stalin was simply more left than Gandhi. There are fundamental political differences between them that the old categories on their own can't explain. Similarly, we generally describe social reactionaries as 'right-wingers', yet that leaves left-wing reactionaries like Robert Mugabe and Pol Pot off the hook.
That's about as much as we should tell you for now. After you've responded to the following propositions during the next 3-5 minutes, all will be explained. In each instance, you're asked to choose the response that best describes your feeling: Strongly Disagree, Disagree, Agree or Strongly Agree. At the end of the test, you'll be given the compass, with your own special position on it. "

"I want to invite you to support my candidacy for President of the United States. I pledge to you that a vote for the Constitution Party ticket is a vote that will help to restore the American Republic.
I invite you to explore the site and find out why we believe, along with more and more Americans, that a return to Constitutional government is the only real remedy for a broken American dream.
Find out what we mean when we say we are committed to a civil government in these United States that acknowledges God, defends the family, and restores the American Replubic to its founding principles."

Atlantic Unbound | Interviews | 2004.02.27:
"In discussions of race and politics in America -- especially common during an election year -- such phrases as 'The Power of the Black Vote' and 'The Crisis in Black Leadership' are repeated again and again. These phrases reveal long-held assumptions about the tendency of American blacks to act as a group, voting in concert and hearkening to the voices of a small number of racial spokespeople. But in her controversial new book, The End of Blackness: Returning the Souls of Black Folks to Their Rightful Owners, the author and commentator Debra Dickerson seeks to explode such beliefs, arguing instead that "the concept of 'blackness,' as it has come to be understood, is rapidly losing its ability to describe, let alone predict or manipulate, the political and social behavior of African Americans.""

Brandy Baker: Is Nader on to Something?:
"If the American mainstream media had given Ralph Nader the coverage throughout 2000 that they gave him this past weekend, we would today have a strong, federally funded Green Party and President Gore would be seeking re-election this November."
